What Carol Quinn & Anny Beck have done with 3Lunches is truly inspiring. Great interview with lessons for everyone, at any level. I’m lucky enough to work with my 3Lunches mentor, Kathy Ireland, always so much to learn from her. Carol & Anny, to be asked and allowed to add my culinary flavor to the mix, an honor. Thank you both for sharing.

Barnes & Noble has an asinine policy. I received a set of books not to my taste as a gift. The gift giver provided me the cash register receipt for the product purchase. The item was purchased 7-30-09 and I received it 8-23-09.

When I went to the B&N store nearest me on 8-23-09, I was told returns or exchanges with register receipts could only be made within 14 days after purchase. I explained I had just received the item and it was still sealed in their plastic wrap. No dice. They wouldn't take it... even with the receipt, in NEW condition, and with me only wanting to make an exchange... it wasn't even like I wanted CASH!!

Only then did I read the back of the receipt and it said with a GIFT receipt items could be returned or exchanged up to 60 days later! 60 days!!!

I always thought a receipt was a receipt!

I e-mailed B&N to give them a chance to make good on this but I am doubtful they'll do anything or even care.

[...] It was an honor last month to not only guest host for Rob McNealy’s Startup Story Radio show, but to interview the Sausage King of Hell’s Kitchen (New York City), David Samuals of Esposito’s Italian Sausage. His interview is sure to inspire other entrepreneurs as the business was grown out of the disaster of 9/11.
Very good point. A lot of people sign up for programs, throw up a few banner ads and then when nothing happens they get frustrated and quit. It is like starting any other business. It takes work and time!

Not enough people take affiliate marketing as a serious business. They go into it thinking it's a get rich quick scheme and then fail. It's just like starting any other business and it needs to be approached with professionalism. Great tip on networking--you would if you were starting any other biz!

Enjoyable, informative interview Rob.

Dan is certainly well spoken and shares from real world experience. If you are a small business, perhaps even a solo entrepreneur, Dan offers some practical advice to help publicize our businesses and make us more famous in our market.

As a 34 year vet of Public REALations as I like to call it I would advise Miriam to do a MASSIVE PR campaign to get all the VIPs of Detroit, her hometown, using her skin care line. She could set up her Teava biz as a Social Enterprise as I'm doing with 7th Haven Development to help put people back to work that have been displaced here in the western North Carolina mountains by
manufacturing going overseas.

Detroit is hurting and she could get a REAL boost by helping her hometown as she seems passionate about it.

I worked there for 15 years, went thru many changes. It was a great place to work for when the father was alive, he always believed in the customers first and highest quality of product.
After being abused by young Supervisors that had no experience on the phones or back ground it took a tole on me. I was a manager of several years for the telephone company and would never have treated employees the way I was treated...They have driven the best caring sales reps. out that make commission and in my opinion the Simon Brothers don't care about the customers any more, just take in new people pay them $10.00 per hr. knowing they won't stay rather then pay the good loyal employees commission..It is their loss. Burning thru the customer base, I can turn a $200.00 sale into a $500.00 sale easily and keep them as a returning customer. It is sald they don't ask us seasoned people for feed back. Allot of us tried and no one listened.
People are going to Cosco and other places that get just or more better quality food at much lesser price in this economy. I do...
I used to love working at O.S., but we have to change with the times....and not make the customer is feel like they are lied to.
Free Burgers do nothing!!

A Prior employer there, All new management, quality has dropped, we have to lie to customers or get fired. The Simon brothers only care about the almight dollar. If their beloved father was alive, he would be so ashamed of what has happened to this Company.

Some Supervisors tell us our beef is grain feed, others tell it is not, just a sample that things are gone awray. I could no longer lie to customers, I have morales and know the product had dropped, and feel sorry for the customers...Dealing with internet prices, mailers, Inbound calls, Retail stores prices as all are different.
The marketing department has no idea what the other departments are doing. It is like 5 different companies...I apologize as treated like a pion yet loved by the customers and keep giving your comments. Hopefully it will do some good.

I think you have a good point. It can totally depend on the audience. I would include it for a potential employer too, in most cases.

Interesting topic. I am trying to decide whether to put my MBA on my netwroking business card. While I would never put it after my name on my resume or on a normal business card i am leaning towards putting it on my networking card because there are some employers who are specifically looking for an MBA.

If you have any automotive issues you MUST contact Gail Dunn at the Women's Automotive Connection.

I am really new to the whole thing and twitter especially. I find it hard to keep up with all of the places I have to update, follow and read each day plus the emails that come to my several addys. I am also trying to do some video posting as well. Sometimes the technology is really a wall for me. Thanks for the policies, they are helpful. But I don't know what a DM is and that is your first policy. Reading one of the comments here, it might mean direct mail as in directly emailing someone, but I am a bit lost with it. If anyone could clarify, please let me know.

I'm an award-winning VA from Australia, have been in private practice for nearly 10 years with clients across the globe, and am founder of Australia's only source of fully pre-qualified, skills tested and reference checked virtual assistants: the Australian Virtual Business Network (http://www.avbn.com.au). (I'm happy to be corrected but I think the AVBN is actually the only network worldwide that asks members to undergo skills testing and actually checks business references before membership is granted.)

I'm afraid I don't Twitter. But I do encourage anyone looking for a professional and qualified virtual assistant to do their research - just as they would if they are looking to hire an employee.

Not all VAs are alike - and anyone on the WWW can say anything about who they are, what their skill set is etc and you really have no idea if they're telling you the truth. I'm not sure the number of followers they have on Twitter necessarily makes them the "best VA".

Brad Pregerson's comment is interesting ... and not strictly correct. Not ALL VAs require monthly packages and they certainly aren't all overpriced and/or based in the US. There are qualified virtual assistants all around the globe - however, the US accounts for most of them. If you add "Australia" or "the UK" or elsewhere to your Google search you'll find there are loads of others.

Unfortunately his experience is not uncommon - hence another reason I began the AVBN: to afford clients a level of protection so they can be assured who they are getting is precisely who they say they are.

Price depends on a number of factors including: skill level, years in business, specialty, services offered, location ... shop around. But bear in mind that if you are after a fairly specialist skill set you will need to pay for it. You wouldn't expect to hire a plumber and pay him what YOU thought the job was worth, right?

Also bear in mind that you can call yourself a virtual assistant, but clients should make sure they are clear about how THEY define a virtual assistant. And in that way they can then find the VA who fits their needs.

Cheers

I am an award winning VA (from the UK Business sector and NOT other VA's). I am not in contention because of personal reasons I am now outsourcing.

I tried 3 VA's and have gone with various companies that do the specific items of work I want done. They are cheaper and although companies the workers have made an effort to get to know what I want and how I want it done - far better than almost any VA I have ever met.

I will use specialists for my needs. I am learning as since 2000 I have given about 20% of my time pro-bono for those starting up as VA's. I now know that if you want a good VA they MUST specialise in one thing and not be a general worker in all.

Also if you want a secretary, make sure one person is going to be doing the work and not a 'group' of people. Your input is even more important than theirs and trying to do that with a group of personalities is almost impossible.

I don't know how many followers I have on Twitter but I have 4000 on my one website run just by me for free to support other VA's. Di Chapman, The Award Winning Virtual Assistant

It sounds to me what you are looking for is a secretarial service, not a Virtual Assistant. Here is an article you might find helpful:

I've worked with some great VAs and some horrible VAs. Generally I find you get what you pay for. My biggest gripe is that most of the VAs I've worked with are not immediately availible when I need them and the turn over rate is astronomical. All that said I have to second Brad's comment. I've worked with TaskUs these past two months and found their work pretty good and always reliable...plus it's cheap, which is great in this economy.

Hi Rob,

I highly doubt I'm in the top on Twitter as I typically market my product reviews site over my Virtual Assistant job there. I would like to nominate myself though. I am a Virtual Assistant currently to Ben Curtis of RailsKits.com and BenCurtis.com. I have experience in marketing/market research and years of experience in the technology field as both Admin Assistant and IT support, and much more. I do have a full resume that I can send if you are interested!

Good luck on your search for a VA!

I'm not afraid to blatantly self-promote. A twitter grader search for 'Virtual Assistant' puts me at a solid #25 - I've been a VA since 2000 specializing in websites, Joomla, SEO and graphic design.

The key to working with a VA is clear, concise communication and to be aware that it's still "You get what you pay for," so be certain expectations are stated in advance; how much time should be billed for a particular task, when it should be completed, when reports should be submitted, etc. Get everything in writing and have a backup in place in case the #1 Virtual Assistant issue arises - they "disappear" on you. Once you find the right Virtual Assistant, you'll quickly wonder how you ever got anything done without them.

Feel free to follow me at http://twitter.com/virtuallin

Hi Rob,

As much as I would like to nominate myself (or RT and have my fellow entrepreneurs, followers and clients nominate me), I have to agree with Tracey and Laurie. Not every client is a good fit for every VA. It does depend on the tasks you need. But, it also depends on their personalities. Example: If one person is very wishy-washy in their thinking process and the other is extremely detail-oriented, the two will clash.

There are a lot of VAs that offer an array of services (like mine). And then there are those that specialize only in certain areas. I offer basic admin assistance, professional assistance (ie. bookkeeping, transcription, project mgmt, etc.) and marketing/design/technical assistance (graphic design, web design/development, seo, marketing, etc.). I am able to offer my clients a broad range of services - sort of like a one-stop-shop. But, there may be someone looking for just a basic admin with only basic admin skills - they will be much less expensive.

So, finding the BEST VA is truly a personalized choice. Just as there is always a perfect love out there for everyone...there is a perfect VA out there for everyone.

To your success,

Susan McCool

Hope to see you following me - http://www.twitter.com/susanmccool

Rob, my Detail Wrangler is http://twitter.com/thedetailqueen (Kailu McQueen). She's in the Colorado Front Range, but works with folks around the country doing a broad range of detail work for entrepreneurs.

For me, she handles everything from bookkeeping and banking to filing in my office and ordering things. Highly recommended.

Interesting question! I was inspired to do a TwitterGrader search to see where I ranked according to them! I've got two spots in the top 100 (my personal and my business Twitter accounts), but really, as Tracey commented, the best VA for YOU will be one who has a personality that compliments the tasks you need done and who offers true value for the service. And to commenter Brad - you seem to have a skewed idea of good virtual assistant services. VA's rarely work "full-time", as we are independent contractors. And yes, the cheaper services are based overseas generally, as to make a living wage in the US or Canada (where I'm from!) you simply cannot charge $5 or $10 per hour. To get a professional you must be willing to pay a fair rate.

Good luck to you Rob if you do choose to contract a virtual assistant!!

Hey Rob,
Great post! I am a virtual assistant, and I should be telling you that I am the best VA on Twitter!
However, based on your post details above, I have to point out that it depends on what tasks you want to outsource, who will be the best VA for you.
Each VA has a niche area (mine is document work, article & email marketing), and their strengths may not make them the best fit for you.
But you're in luck! The VA community is so great, that if we don't fit your requirements, we probably know someone who might be able to!
So I will RT this for sure, and I will be back to check up on the comments often! Thanks for posting! @Tracey_D

I've been using TaskUs.com for a couple months now. I've used other VA services, and the problem is all of them require monthly packages, and are either over priced and based in the US, or cheap and you have to deal with an offshore VA...which is SOOOO frustrating. As an entrepreneur trying to start up an idea of my own, these guys were helpful. They are personable, and really helped me develop some ideas for my business, and then were kind of like the project managers. I had them compile a list of manufacturers overseas, contact them directly and ask a number of questions (info I needed for the product I'm developing). The results I got were EXCELLENT and really did save me a lot of time. I think its a better model than a full time VA, and they have a nice looking website too.

Absolutely! I am actually a bigger fan of prepaid than credit - my point is that most cards provide a facility to centralize spend reporting to minimize inefficiencies. The post was specific to credit cards so I tailored my comment accordingly! :)

That's true, but you can get the same benefit using a debit card most of the time, and the you don't even have a cc bill to pay! Thanks for your input.

I generally agree with the tip about credit cards and the need to be more conservative about spending, but there are some benefits to using them other than to borrow money. The main one is centralizing spending so you minimize the time it takes to keep your books. Plus, by eliminating stamps, buying check stock, paying an outside bookkeeper or having someone on staff, you save money and you reduce errors associated with keying in data. Also, by seeing all the spending in one place either online or on a statement, its easy to review company spending and you make only one payment. Most vendors accept cards these days so when its time to pay them, skip the check process and use your card instead. They don't have to be for T&E or a short term borrowing facility only.

On behalf of InspireMeToday.com, congratulations to the winners! Each day we'll bring you quality inspiration from an incredible Inspirational Luminary. We're honored to have Rob as one of the Luminaries from 2008.

In 2009 we're off to gather inspiration from the world. In May, my husband and I depart in a small prop plane, flying 30,000 miles around the world to deliver 100,000 hugs and share $1,000,000 of abundance with the world.

Why are we doing this? It's fun, it's adventurous and just might get some folks' minds off of doom and gloom long enough to see the possibilities in their own life. Only 256 men and 21 women have ever flown around the world in a small plane, and none have had the added components of this inspirational tour. It is our hope that as you follow this journey you'll ask yourself, "If they can do this, what can I do?" And from that, your world will open to possibility.

We welcome you to follow the tour at http://GlobalHugTour.com.

Again, our congratulation to the winners listed above. We look forward to inspiring you!

Hugs,

Gail Lynne Goodwin

Rob,

Excellent tips for anytime, but especially today.

One of my favorite affirmations is:
I choose to not participate in a recession.

My passion is to help small business owners experience heaps of profit & oodles of fun.

I'm brand-new to Twitter, less than 24 hours in. This very well-thought-out policy makes me wonder whether Twitter is a good choice for me. My purpose for being here is primarily for business, to find out whether using Twitter will be a sensible use of my time. That's not to say that finding new friends with common interests wouldn't be a delightful side benefit. It would be, of course, but that's not my purpose.

I've been very puzzled by the number of people who have signed up to follow me. Obviously, I have a lot to learn about Twittering!

The best Customer Service experience I've had was with one of our Vendors. AudioQuest Cables is a product we sell, and as a Marketer for our company I was trying to pull together some print materials for our customers from this Vendor. Instead of trying to re-invent the wheel so to say I contacted this Vendor to see what they had already printed. I was contacted same day by this company stating that all of their marketing materials are just via Web, and they didn't have any "brochures or pdfs for me to use". Then an hour later the CMO contacted me with my requirements for a Brochure. Then 2 hours later, they had the brochures in my e-mail for "My" approval, and an e-mail later an order of 100 in the mail to me. I was blown away that they cared that much about our "small" business to get those materials out to me as quickly as possible.

You're right on that our expectations of customer service have lowered. How many times have you received the wrong order at a McDonald's and said, "Oh well, it's McDonalds. What do you expect?"

My cool customer service story: I've just started the daunting task of searching for a home to buy. My daughter starts school this year so finding a home in the right school boundary is paramount. The only site I found to do this in Colorado is cohomefinder.com.

Their search is fantastic! You can search by almost any parameter you want. They also hooked me up with a nice realtor who has access to my saved searches. The extra bonus: I emailed them to report a bug on their site and they called me back within a week to tell me it would be fixed and to ask how my home search was going!

P.S. I have nothing against McDonald's except that even though I don't like their food, I still end up eating there at least 3 times a month.

A few years ago I went to Nordstrom's to pick up two pairs of pants they were supposed to have shortened. When I arrived, the pants were nowhere to be found. The manager (who was more upset than I was over the mistake) found them -- they had never been submitted for tailoring for some reason.

She not only put a rush on the hemmed pants but personally hand-delivered them -- free of charge -- to my home.

I've been a loyal customer every since. ;-)

Southwest Airlines.

On a 2006 Thanksgiving flight between San Diego and Oakland, I needed to entertain a cranky 4 year old. We constructed a collage using pictures from the in-flight magazine and some tape I had in my carry-on. SWA plane was the centerpiece, along with an Abraham Lincoln doll for the pilot (Skymall catalog), and several other characters we found. Whole thing was propped up on a wood stir stick stuck through the bottom of an inverted coffee cup.

Flight attendants were so tickled with this, they brought us "prizes" (a sick sack full of SWA-branded pens, playing cards, and other goodies they could find), comped my drinks (believe me, those were needed), and announced our achievement over the plane's speakers. This amused me and thoroughly delighted the 4 year old... making what could have been a difficult trip into an exciting day and the highlight of the 4 year old's Thanksgiving trip to her aunt's house. Nothing else impressed her the entire time (much to her aunt's chagrin).

Flight attendants were so tickled with this, they brought us “prizes” (a sick sack full of SWA-branded pens, playing cards, and other goodies they could find), comped my drinks (believe me, those were needed), and announced our achievement over the plane’s speakers. This amused me and thoroughly delighted the 4 year old… making what could have been a difficult trip into an exciting day and the highlight of the 4 year old’s Thanksgiving trip to her aunt’s house. Nothing else impressed her the entire time (much to her aunt’s chagrin).

If I were in the survey business I might agree. But to address your point, there is no "MBA" on my business card.

In the world of survey taking, your question would not have made it to the street. You essentially biased the respondent at the outset. It would have been better to phrase it, "Do you think it is acceptable..." or "Do you think it is appropriate... ". Given that the response is obviously biased, it suggests a greater weighting in favour of putting MBA on business cards.

Rob

Good post

I am new to blogging and twitter too. I have never been one to socialize much at a party or in group settings. Blogging, using social media in my marketing and now twitter is a real stretch out of the comfort zone.

I look to the names that are recognized in social media as a model in all my online efforts.

I am using twitter right now as a way to announce my new blog posts, both to my readers and to my Facebook friends on my wall. I do tweet a few people and can see how I can do more.

Perry Belcher has a good video on his take on social media and how he uses it for business. I have it on my list as content for a post.

Thank you for this post

Mark

I have been using those tips and more many years. I'm 81 years old and founded our flooring business 55 years ago. The younger ones in our business have seen nothing but good times and wouldn't know hard time from the side of the wall. I have seen many ups and downs in my time and am full of inexpensive advise. If you pick up the pennies the dollars will take care of themselves. Cash flow is the name of the game.

Rob,
As one business owner to another, these are great tips. Customer service and networking are key in any economic times but especially in a downturn. Clients are going to get many offers from your competition.

Networking allows you to meet new people every day. It is not that you may sell them your services or products but it is the 10 people they know.

Lets go forward into 2009 and prosper.

Great idea to share your policies with your followers. It's like setting boundaries which is always a good thing in building a healthy relationship. Thanks for the clarity.

I'm still feeling my way around social networking and am getting more comfortable with Twitter, but my philosophy refects my desire to be be a giver first and see where the relationship goes from there. Your perspective will be a help as I connect with people using Twitter.

I look forward to knowing you better. Wishing you the best in 2009

My husband got a huge paycut in July so we quickly shaved off the excess in our lives...when the financial market went way south, we'd already made tons of changes so it was less painful.
I'm moving forward doing more of the same in this new year...cutting out the "stuff" and focusing on what matters. It's amazing how much we DON'T need!

Happy New Year!

Keep on with the lack of dependency on material possessions! That's cool. All it takes for me is a satisfying camping trip to realize all the things I have that I don't need. It does nothing to get me to actually get rid of the stuff, but the sentiment is there!

Failures of '08:
Too much dreaming, not enough doing.
Overuse of StumbleUpon (If you don't know what it is, don't try it. You'll lose hours of your life!)

Goals of '09:
Fix the failure of '08 by changing the Wouldn't-it-be-cool-ifs and Someday-we-shoulds to I'm-going-to-dos.
Contribute more to the internets instead of just taking from them.

Hey Rob, this is a great piece of work. I'm analyzing my futures trading charts created in the last year for patterns to my trading behavior as always on Jan. 1st. Last year the rule I feared the most did materialize: The 2X4 rule...everything takes twice the money and four times the time. I accomplished alot in 2008 but also realize that I got done about 1/4 of what I had hoped to do in business. I don't feel like my business goals were really flowing until November.

I drive a $5000 car and realize a $80,000 car won't make me happier. This year I made all my own Christmas Cards and gifts. I found people liked them more than store bought stuff anyway. I'm planning on taking massive action and making myself more immune to distractions in business in 2009.

I am applauding the work you did as a family. Those are all fabulous changes. May you each one be blessed in ways you cannot, at this moment, imagine for striving to be more rather than have more.

This is the year in which Esmaa the hermit gets kicked out of the tower and relearns social skills. I intend to complete both a non-fiction book and my fourth novel. Selah.

My small business ( websites ) had a huge year in 2008. I turned a lot of ideas and goals into realities. The downside, though, is that over expanding may have spread my focus too much.

I don't plan to expand at all this year, my resolution is to cultivate and maintain all of my existing sites. All my focus will go to adding interesting, well prepared content!

Happy New Year!

Rob,
It takes courage to tell the world your resolutions, it takes even more to tell the world where you went wrong.

However, knowing one more way of how things don't work, only puts you that much closer to knowing how things do work!

2008 Sins:

Too much unfocused and unproductive time wasted down the drain of time.

2009 Refocus:

Realizing the precious moments I have been given and treating each and every moment with the utmost attention! Focused force to drive my business to the next level and beyond!

Thanks for the post!

It is funny how we use the word 'inspire' to mean that someone or something 'fills us with an animating, quickening, or exalting influence.' The word is derived from the word to breath. In Hebrew the word for breath is 'rouach' which is also translated 'spirit.'

My greatest 'historical' inspiration is Christ. My greatest present day inspiration is Joyce Myer.

It is the inspiration of Christ, who has caused me to work diligently to help others understand and deepen their relationship with Him, to create 'The Christian Success Institute.' It is vital for us to know that God wants us to be successful so that we can convey His blessings to others. We can accomplish this through the diligent study of His Precepts and Promises.

Thanks for the opportunity to express this.

This year my inspiration was Ron Paul. Not for political ideology, but for the incredible integrity with which he's conducted his life.

The man is so painfully honest and consistent in his beliefs that he has returned a portion of his congressional budget back to the treasury every year he's been in office.

As a co-founder of a start-up, I strive to meet that standard every day and am thankful that people like Ron Paul, rare as they may be, are willing and able to teach by example.

The person who inspired me the most this year was Ryan Zinn, a 35-year-old athlete who was given a life saving heart transplant when he was dying a slow death at the age of 15. In all these years, Ryan has never taken that gift for granted. Although he has never had the privilege of meeting his donor family, he thinks often about their generosity, and their 20-year-old son who died in a tragic car accident. “Grateful” does not begin to describe his feelings for the donor family that made the conscious choice to give their young son’s heart to a complete stranger in what must have been their darkest hour.

Today, Ryan considers every day a gift, and lives life like there’s no tomorrow. Because Ryan knows that he’s living on borrowed time. That the heart pumping inside him has lasted twice as long than most transplanted organs. When I interviewed him earlier this year for a newsletter I write for Cleveland Clinic (http://www.clevelandclinic.org), he kiddingly told me he must be doing something right, because most hearts don’t last as long as his. Truth be told, Ryan works tirelessly to keep his body (and heart) in shape, exercising regularly, and competing in a variety of athletic events annually, including the US Transplant Games.

A big believer in giving back to the community, Ryan speaks often to children and adults about the importance of making a difference in the world, whether that’s through organ donation or working in a soup kitchen.

The truth is that Ryan is my inspiration. His fierce determination to live life to the fullest inspired me to become an organ donor this year. The fact is that there are so many people in need of organs, these days. And while I hope to live a long life, when I do die, I’d like to help someone else live a healthy, active, meaningful life. I hope this story will inspire some of your readers to give the gift of life to someone else when that time comes. While it’s admittedly difficult to think of what will happen to our body when we die, organ donation is a generous way to give the gift of life to someone in need. Signing up to be an organ donor only takes a few minutes, and can save dozens of lives: http://www.donatelife.net/index.php Won’t you consider, giving the gift of life?

My 94 year old grandfather inspires me daily. He is still in the house he bought with my grandmother 60+ years ago. Every morning begins the same, prune juice while his rasberry tea is steeping. He reads the paper, has breakfast which always includes fresh fruit, then, business as usual.

A typical day includes a walk with the fluffy black semi-feral cat, review of some legal documents, reading, reading, reading, calls to check on one or two of his 8 adult children, and some media outlet to update him on his investments.

He's been practicing law so long, people continue to come to him for insight not realizing, he's not 70 anymore. His brain confirms daily that he's as sharp as he was at 70 and daily ignores the clues his body gives to the contrary.

Just this weekend, he donned his tuxedo for some big deal in New Orleans.

I want to be like my Paw Paw, live, love, learn and have fun!

Thanks for sharing your policies, Rob. I think it's a very creative and useful idea to have a Twitter policy. As a security awareness and management consultant, I am often asked about how to safely use social networking sites.

Since you have such a nice outline for your policy, I decided to create my own, based on it. Mine is more strictly business-oriented, since I don't get into discussion of issues outside of my business. I'm also working on guidelines and training for businesses who want to empower their staff to work securely and efficiently, which will make use of this idea.

So, I invite others to view my Twitter Usage Policy and use any parts of it that they like by going to the link above.

Twitter: ableo2

The person who has inspired me most this year has been Barack Obama. Everything from the way he has embraced social media to spread the word to his inspirational speeches. Despite the major challenges and obstacles he will be facing as president, his strong sense of hope for our country is contagious and makes us believe that together "Yes We Can" overcome these challenges. He has inspired me to soulsearch and make personal changes that will enable me to be the best I can be and inspire those around me.

Hi Rob, great article! I'm redoing my own site and may follow suit in creating a Twitter Policy/Philosophy page. Well done. As you may remember, we somehow connected on Twitter (I'm @north100) and then on facebook. It's still such a new and wild world to me but very fascinating as connections just seem to naturally develop. A bit of weeding now and then seems to be all that's needed - for now anyway. Great analogy likening Twitter to a cocktail party. Good stuff. All the best to you in 2009! Cheers ~Lo

I think all of us are still trying to understand twitter and use it to the best possible advantage. It is one of those things that because they are not bounded in any way or form, give space for many different kinds of interaction. I do not follow the same guidelines, yet it works for me in the way I need it to. I do agree strongly on one point; spam is outrageous in any medium, kind, way or form.

I read your twitter policy, and don't have a problem with any of it. I follow people I find interesting. If they are someone like @copyblogger, I don't expect them to follow me back. Sometimes I follow people that I want to me follow back. And I may unfollow them after a week or so if they don't. I figure it may take people a few days to catch up with all their new followers. This brings me to my point. You followed me, them unfollowed me after only one day. I find that to be annoying, rude, and disrespectful of my time. It's like tapping someone on the shoulder in a crowded social, and then walking away just as they are about to turn around and talk to you.

Rob,

I like how you made your twittering more official by creating this policy. It definitely shows a professional mind set and I am happy to be following you. I plan on checking out your site and look forward to learning something new.

Thank you , Matt

Good stuff Rob! This is why I go to the cocktail party--to find people like (but not too like me!) and socialize. Sometimes that means just quietly listening to what others say, sometimes contributing when (I think) I have something stimulating or different that enriches the conversation.

It's been a pleasure meeting you. I may wonder off to meet others, but it's great to have a familiar face to whom one can return from time to time. Now, can I buy you a drink? What are you having?

Maybe fleshing out a policy would have helped me not have to go cold turkey on my other account. I use the one I have now primarily as a newsfeed and follow/unfollow as such.

Great ideas on Twitter policy. Good common sense usually saves the day. Let's hope it catches on somewhere.

Merry Christmas,
Alan

I appreciate your articulating operating norms that make good sense, and would seem to be obvious or implicit, but obviously benefit us all by stating them.
